  • Object Removal

The magic of modern AI photo editing isn't just changing backgrounds; it's removing unwanted objects seamlessly. From photo bombers to distracting elements, AI generative fill can clean up a picture in seconds. This advanced task requires the AI to not only erase but also plausibly recreate what was behind. We put Dream Image and GPT-4o to the test to see which one masters this digital wizardry.

Round 1: The Crowded Stadium

In this test, the goal was to clear a packed stadium, leaving only the main subject and the empty stands.

Prompt: Remove the crowd in the background of the baseball stadium, keep the woman, hot dog, drink, bench, and field unchanged.

Dream Image & GPT-4o: A tie. Both AI models performed flawlessly. They correctly identified and removed the entire crowd, then intelligently generated empty stadium seats that look completely realistic. This demonstrates that for clear, well-defined object removal tasks, both tools are exceptionally powerful and accurate.

Round 2: The Royal Guards

This challenge involved removing two guards from a scene with detailed architecture, requiring a clean fill of the famous gates of Buckingham Palace.

Prompt: Remove the guards in the background, keep the woman, hat, coat, and building unchanged.

Dream Image: A solid result. Dream Image successfully removed the guards and filled the space. On close inspection, the generated fill of the gate and pavement is slightly less detailed than the original surroundings, appearing a bit soft.

GPT-4o: A slightly cleaner execution. GPT-4o also removed the guards perfectly, but its generative fill of the background architecture appears more crisp and coherent, blending more seamlessly with the existing textures of the gate and ground.

Round 3: The Red Carpet Frenzy

The ultimate test: removing a chaotic mob of photographers from a complex red carpet scene with intense, varied lighting.

Prompt: Remove the photographers in the background, keep the woman, red gown, and red carpet unchanged.

Dream Image: An outstanding performance. Dream Image not only erased the photographers but also creatively and realistically reconstructed the background. It extended the building facade and Hollywood sign and beautifully re-interpreted the harsh flashes into a soft, ambient glow that enhances the image.

GPT-4o: A good, but less refined, result. GPT-4o also removed the photographers, but the generated background feels flatter and more artificial. The lighting and textures in the filled areas don't blend as naturally, lacking the sophisticated touch seen in Dream Image's version.

The Verdict

Both Dream Image and GPT-4o possess incredible object removal capabilities. For straightforward tasks, they are equally matched. GPT-4o can even show an edge in specific architectural reconstructions.

However, when faced with true complexity and creative challenges, Dream Image pulls ahead. Its ability to not just fill a space, but to do so with superior context, lighting, and aesthetic sensibility makes it the more advanced and reliable tool for photographers and creators who need flawless, high-impact results.
